Ten Makeup Mistakes That Make You Look Old.

It's not called a beauty "routine" for nothing: Once we find a set of makeup products we like—say, in our 20s—too many of us avoid switching things up, sometimes for years on end. In fact, in a recent Prevention.com poll, over 30% of respondents said they "hadn't changed a thing" about their beauty routine in more than 10 years!

1)-You're too skinny:
Yup, there is a downside to being too thin!“Loss of facial fat causes sagging and a gaunt, aged appearance,” says dermatologist Mary P. Lupo, M.D., clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans. Yo-yo dieting is another no-no. The repeated weight gain and loss stretches your skin and makes it loose.
Skin solution: Maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise. And be sure to feed your face too. “Research shows there are foods that will enhance your appearance from the inside out,” says nutritionist Lisa Drayer, R.D., author of The Beauty Diet (McGraw-Hill). These include
2)-Makeup Mishap: Foundation Foul-Up:
When fine lines settle in and sun spots multiply, many women reach for foundation, layering it on like it’s going out of style. Unfortunately, instead of hiding imperfections, the more-is-better strategy brings attention to them. Excess product has nowhere to go but to settle into creases, which exaggerates wrinkles, and thick layers piled on top of each other create a dated, masklike complexion.
For smooth, flawless-looking skin, choose a lightweight liquid foundation over a powder. Look for an easy-absorbing fluid formula such as Maybelline New York Fit Me! Foundation ($8; drugstores); it moisturizes skin and is easier to blend than powders, which can turn chalky and leave behind a dull, flat finish, a trait we associate with older skin. Squeeze a nickel-size amount in your palm and rub it on like you would a moisturizer. Applying with your fingers instead of a brush eliminates the chance of product overload.
3)-Makeup Mishap: Caked-On Concealer:
“Concealer can be your best friend when covering blemishes,” says NYC New York Color artist Mathew Nigara. The problem arises when women use the same trusty spot concealer for other issues, such as hiding dark under-eye circles. A cover-up that’s thick enough to hide a pimple is likely to have a tacky, heavy consistency that’s too rich for the delicate thin skin under the eyes. Instead, use a sheer formula such as Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Fast Fix Concealer Inspired by Carmindy ($9; drugstores) to camouflage circles. Tap on with a concealer brush and blend with your finger for the most natural finish, and you'll foil signs of exhaustion without compromising a youthful appearance.
4)-Makeup Mishap: Runny Mascara:
While waterproof mascara is less prone to smudging, the stronger formulas can dry out lashes, which can become thinner and more fragile as we age. To get full-looking lashes sans smearing, Carmindy, host and makeup artist for TLC’s What Not To Wear, offers the following tips: 1. To give the illusion that skimpy lashes are thick, smudge a chocolate brown eyebrow pencil like CoverGirl Brow & Eye Makers Pencil in midnight brown ($4; drugstores) along the roots of the lash line. 2. To coat and seal delicate lashes, choose a gentle mascara such as Blinc Mascara ($25; blincinc.com). “It’s made with polymers that form a tube around each lash to prevent smudging, yet it comes off easily with warm water,” says Carmindy.
5)-Makeup Mishap: Metallic Lids:
Like the ’80s obsession with perms, every trend must come to an end. One of the hardest for women to kick: frosty eye shadow. When eyelids become less taut, usually around age 40, it’s time to graduate from the glitter. Shimmer shadows settle into crinkles, magnifying crepey lids. Matte shadows such as Revlon Matte Eye Shadow in peach sorbet ($5; drugstores), on the other hand, are extremely flattering. Taupes, lavenders, soft peaches, and grays work on all skin tones. Want to up the drama? Incorporate eyeliner in a jewel tone such as garnet or plum for a pop of color. “To create the illusion of a lifted eye, avoid heavy liner on the bottom lash and apply it to the upper, outer corners of the eyes,” says Shawn Towne, national educator for Jane Iredale.
7)-Makeup Mishap: Vampire Red Lips :
It’s an age-old fact: a dark color, be it on your floor, wall, or even lips, makes any surface area look smaller. Because lips naturally lose fullness over time, the last thing we want to do is shrink them. Plus, deep hues make teeth look less white. “For lips that look juicy, wear vibrant lip glosses and lipsticks,” says Nigara. To instantly update your look, slick on a sheer version of popular lip colors such as coral or hibiscus—try CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm ($6; drugstores), a line that's full of fresh, youthful shades.
8)-Makeup Mishap: Sunken Cheeks:
“Women always choose blah cheek colors because they’re afraid of color,” says Carmindy. The reality is that bright blush actually brings youth and vitality to the face, helping to restore the look of fullness to sallow cheeks. “Ditch dusty browns and roses and go for a cream formula in a floral shade,” she says. Creams blend better than powders and add the extra moisture mature skin needs. One to try: Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Pink ($25; shop.janeiredale.com). To apply, start by positioning your brush higher on the cheeks, then blend the blush downward toward the apples. This technique creates a more modern finish, compared with the pink stripes up to the temples that were popular back in the day.
9)-Makeup Mishap: Overplucked Brows:
It’s important to resist the urge to overpluck brows, especially as we age. Overtweezing can make brows disappear entirely, and those strands may never grow back. Thankfully, there are brow pencils and powders like Sonia Kashuk Arch Alert Brow Kit ($10; Target) that can bring sparse hairs back to their fullest potential. To apply, start at the inner brow and work your way outward using a stiff, angled brush or sharp brow pencil, whichever you prefer, and make short, feathery strokes.
10)-Makeup Mishap: Powder Overload:
There’s a fine line between glowing and greasy skin, and many of us aren't sure where it is. The biggest mistake women make when trying to control shine is forgetting to leave a little of that natural glow. One too many pats of powder can wash out the dimension from your face. “A little glisten makes you look fresh,” says Carmindy. To tone down oil without going overboard, use a lightweight pressed powder containing oil-absorbing mica and silica like makeup artist favorite MAC Blot Powder Pressed ($23; maccosmetics.com). Dust it on with a small blush-size powder brush rather than a big dome brush, which can dump powder like a bulldozer. For touch-ups throughout the day, Carmindy recommends using the compact’s puff and tapping it onto, rather than rubbing it across, the skin, a technique that promises to deposit just enough product without crossing the line.

The famous Jamdani sarees are basically from Indian State of West Bengal.

The cotton saris of West Bengal are called Jamdani and they follow the traditional patterns. The Daccai `Jamdani` is a fabric on which the designs are raised in inimitable style. Daccai Jamdani saris distinguished from its mutant cousins by its very fine texture resembling muslin and the elaborate and ornate workmanship.

Daccai jamdani : Daccai Jamdani is distinguished from its mutant cousins by its very fine texture resembling muslin and the elaborate and ornate workmanship. The single warp is usually ornamented with two extra weft followed by
ground weft. While the original Bangladeshi sari is almost invariably on a beige background, the Indian weavers are a little more adventurous in their choice of color schemes. The gossamer thin black Jamdani with its splash of multi colored linear or floral motifs sprinkled generously all over the body and border and crowned with an exquisitely designed elaborate pallu is a feast for the eyes.
Varieties of Jamdani Sarees : There are at least six varieties of Jamdani Sarees, each deriving its name from the village in which it originated, and each with its own distinctive style. The undisputed queen of the range, however, is the fabled Jamdani, which in all its myriad local avtars continues to retain its original grandeur and sophistication. The original version is referred to as Daccai jamdani, although it is now produced in Navdeep and Dhattigram, in West Bengal.

The Daccai Jamdani is woven painstakingly by hand on the old fashioned Jala loom, and many take even up to one year to weave a single sari. It feels supple to the touch and drapes gently to reveal the contours of the wearer.

Other Jamadani Sarees : These sarees are mostly Jamdani motifs on Tangail fabric and are generally known by the confusing nomenclature of Tangail Jamdani. Although beige background is the most popular, these are available in a riot of colors Tangail, Dhoneokali, Shantipuri and Begumpuri are other popular styles of Bengali. Of these, Tangail which comes from Fulia, has a fine texture, with its 100s count fabric and highly stylized motifs, while Dhoneokali is known for its stripes and checks.
Shantipur in Nadia, Begumpur, Rajbalhat and Dhanekhali in Hooghly; Kenjekura in Bankura; Fulia, Guptipara and Samudragarh in Nadia and Burdwan - are the homes of these legendary weavers.

How to Take Care Your Baby

Having a baby is one of the most exciting moment of your life. But it also can be one of the most nerve-racking! You may feel overwhelmed by the knowledge that your little baby is totally dependent on you to meet all its needs. But keep in mind that you and your baby will get through this together and challenging time in the process, you will build a special bond that will last for a lifetime. Here are some steps to get you started on the road to success as a new parent:
Any parent will agree that kids fall sick a lot more often than adults
. From common colds and fevers to classic childhood ailments like the measles and chicken pox, many parents feel that they spend a large proportion of their child’s early years either wondering if they are sick or rushing them
to a doctor’s waiting room.

However, there are times when some parents’ genuine anxiety about their child’s health can become obsessive. Experts agree that while there’s every reason to monitor your child’s health on an ongoing basis, there’s no reason to press the panic button every time he or she complains of being ill.
Make sure you have your baby's car seat installed in your car. You will need this to bring the baby home from the hospital. Hospital nursery staff can help you if you are unsure how to install base. Or you can request assistance at the local police station or fire department.

Conducted a study to decide whether you want to breastfeed or give formula your baby in a bottle. Some parents even do a combination of both. If you decide to breastfeed and your baby is having trouble sticking to, or experiencing other problems, check with a lactation consultant at a local hospital or call your local La Leche League.

Remember never leave your baby unattended on the couch, changing table or bed. Babies can move suddenly. That's a good idea to always keep your baby's hand or a rope on him at the table turned right from the start.

If your baby is circumcised, check with your doctor about the best way to treat the wound until it heals.
Also follow your doctor's advice for treatment of the umbilical cord. Some recommend cleaning every day with alcohol, while others now prefer to let it dry itself. Either way, expect the stump falls within the first few weeks or more.

Always put your baby to sleep on his back or in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress covered by a sheet tight. You can use a baby sleep positioners to ensure that the baby remains in place. Be sure to remove all pillows, blankets and stuffed toys, because it can cover your baby. Sleeping blanket or sleeping bag is the safest option to use if you need to keep your baby warm.

Have a rectal thermometer ready in case of sick babies. If your baby registers a rectal temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius, you should contact your pediatrician immediately.
Prepare to do lots of laundry. Babies can easily go through three or four garments in one day. You can buy special detergent for baby's delicate skin of your baby. You may also need the power of Super stain remover for baby spit up and leak-out diaper stains.

Try to establish routines early as possible. This will help your baby to know what to expect each day and will help build a sense of security.

In the process of caring for your baby, do not forget to take care of yourself, too. Sleep whenever you can, and do not be afraid to ask for help from family and friends when you need it. Many women suffer from baby blues for a few days after birth, but if you experience prolonged sadness or feel unable to cope, seek professional help as soon as possible.

All in the family
Dr RK Anand, medical director and head of the paediatric department at Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital, says parents are more confused these days because very few of them, unlike earlier, have a reliable family physician who would minister to all members of a family.

“Ideally, we should encourage people to choose a good general practitioner (GP),” he explains. “You should only go to a specialist when your family doctor recommends you do so.”

That’s because it’s important to keep a patient’s case history. “This will clearly show you that the child has gained height and weight,” says Dr Anand. He adds, “These days, there are parents who actually shop for doctors – they keep on trying new ones. What you need to do is to find a medical practitioner that you trust and stick with her or him.”

The Tan Commandments

I 1f the sight of your newly bared body gives you the white frights and you plan to color up with instant tanners for your dress-up event, consider the five rules to tan by. Do not sunbathe, sun bake or do anything under the sun that involves getting ‘‘a tan’’. For that to happen you will need to get ‘‘sunburn’’. Think about it.

Tanned limbs should be toned limbs. Rough skin can be moisturized. Dry skin can be sloughed off – salt and oil mixtures work.
Hairy limbs can be waxed, depilated, or shaved.

The downside of tanners is the agent dihydroxyacetone (DHA), but the cosmetic labs are working on its giveaway chemical smell and the drying effect it has on the skin.
Applying a tanner that will develop its full riches in an overheated, airless workplace – or worse, an overheated airless pub or restaurant – is never a good idea. Tanner try-outs are best limited to your own backyard or any other place where a fresh breeze is blowing.
Colors, fragrances and application methods of fake tanners are many, but products that give an instant glow then develop over a day or two to a soft natural color are popular this season.
23 4
5$89.50 A thick, creamy tint that leaves a high shine and glimmer. As it dries the red-brown sheen develops but the color tint remains consistent. Streak free. A faint scent of caramel.
$29.99 a fine spray from the wide nozzle is easily sprayed on inner arms and backs of legs. Good for an allover body tan. Dries quickly but takes a few applications to get the coverage right. A natural color with golden/yellow tones. A pleasant citrus smell.
$39. Dries quickly leaving a high shine bronze shade. A good product for legs that are winter-white but best apply lightly. A light, pleasant fragrance. Washes off.
$24.99 A new product that slicks on to the skin – feels slightly sticky at first, then dries to a natural (no glimmer) color. Can rub off on clothing if not given time to dry completely. A tanner to apply over a few days – stopping when your reach the desired nut-brown maiden look. Give an even color, leaves a moisturized feeling. Shake before using.
45 A bright golden, quite thick cream that soaks in rapidly but still takes time to dry quickly. The recommended time is 15 minutes. Good for all-over color but easy to use too much. Take care around the bony parts – ankles, knees, hands, but its lack of sheen makes it a natural for ageing skin (backs of hands, chicken legs).
$29.90 A bright white fruit-fragranced oily cream, this is a skin nourishes that would be beneficial all year, not just in the sunny months. Contains some DHA, so will continue to color the skin. $44.95 It sprays unevenly and sporadically. The bulky can is awkward to hold and the tan application is streaky. The shade of the tan is orange. It has a metallic scent.
$29.95 Billed as ‘‘spray-on perfect legs in an instant’’, it is easy to apply and the ‘‘instant’’ tan covers freckles and imperfections and looks natural. It goes on like foundation and doesn’t streak. The ‘‘wait 60 seconds and dress’’ is true. The product has a strong chemical scent. The golden color lasts well.
$34.90 A gel product, it is initially dark, and one application was enough (it lasted three days). It takes around 20 minutes to dry. It has a pleasant if initially overpowering scent. It delivered its promise to ‘‘build a natural looking tan enhanced with shimmering mineral’’. Leaves light dusting of gold glitter on the skin – maybe it’s best for an evening-wear tan? $42.50 it makes a lot of sense to include sun protection in a fake tan product. Dubbed a ‘‘light milk sunscreen’’, the thin cream is the color of milky cocoa. The tint it leaves on the skin is a pinkish tan, described by a redhead as ‘‘a good color match with my freckles’’. Takes 15 minutes to dry. As with all SPF products, it needs to be reapplied every couple of hours. Available from pharmacies. Fairfax

Yoga for girls ant boy’s to fight fat?

Australian health experts have said a greater diversity of exercise routines would help girls, who continue to be less active than boys.
However, New Zealand experts have largely dismissed the idea.
The New South Wales Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey report, released this week, surveyed more than 8000 primary and secondary students and found 22.8 per cent were overweight or obese.

Fifty-two per cent of boys reached the recommended level of physical activity, compared with 41 per cent of girls.
The report cited studies that show girls enjoy sports and physical education less than boys.
Dr Louise Hardy, senior research fellow at the University of Sydney's centre for physical activity, told the Daily Telegraph activities like Zumba or pilates could lift young girls' interest in fitness.
But Grant Schofield, the director of AUT's Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition, said such recommendations completely missed the point.
Overseas research showed children now spent about four times more time with their parents as in the mid-1970s.
"Almost all of that time sitting in cars. Getting taken to and from organised activities, where in the past kids have just run around neighbourhoods - free-range kids.
"And that's really what's going to keep obesity away for boys and girls - movement that's part of everyday life all the time."
Dr Katie Fitzpatrick, research fellow at Auckland University and former head of health at Tangaroa College, said her research into Year 12 and 13 girls in South Auckland showed they were active in a wide range of exercise.
"And it's a totally normalised cultural activity for boys to dance - but there's still a presumption in some parts of society that it's not tough.
"I think we can get stuck with splitting it up around gender.
"When if you did a social class-split, or an ethnicity-split, or a tall person/short person-split, then you'd get a different picture."
Gordon Paterson, chief executive of Physical Education New Zealand, said it was important for phys ed classes to include a wide range of actions and motions so children could choose what appealed to them "and run with it".

Fake Doctor Arrested For Injecting Cement And 'Fix A Flat' Into Woman's Buttocks

A transgender woman has been arrested after posing as a doctor and injecting a bizarre cocktail of cement, flat-tire sealant and mineral oil into the buttocks of a patient desperate for a bigger behind, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Oneal Ron Morris of Miami, Florida was arrested on Friday and charged
with practicing medicine without a license and causing serious bodily harm after her victim suffered from
bad side affects from being pumped with the toxic injections, CBSNews.com reported.

Born a man but living as a woman, 30-year-old Morris charged the unidentified woman $700 for the series of butt-enhancing injections in May 2010.
She was left with life-threatening injuries, needing several surgeries and round-the-clock care.
Designer doctor: Morris, 30, who is accused of taking hundreds of dollars to administer potentially lethal shots to alleged patients is seen here carrying a Louis Vuitton handbag.Doctor in the house: Morris performed her have-a-go household operations in homes and hotel rooms across South Florida, police say.
But Florida health investigators took more than a year to gather evidence against Morris because the woman was too embarrassed to come forward.
Morris was allowed out on bail then arrested again on November 23 when a second alleged victim came forward. Corey Alexander Eubank, 40, of Hollywood, her alleged accomplice, was arrested the same day.
Morris performed her have-a-go household operations in homes and hotel rooms across South Florida, police say.
Another alleged victim, Raji Narinesingh, wanted fuller lips, cheeks and chin, but could not afford an operation by a licensed plastic surgeon, using medical silicone.
'Fake doctor': Prosecutors say at least five alleged victims have come forward with information
Narinesingh, who is also a transgender who lives as a woman, says she heard about the 'fake doctor' by word of mouth through the transgender community.

The Biggest Celebrity Transformations Of 2010

After being injected with a cocktail of toxins she allegedly left with lumpen shapes in her cheeks, a misshapen chin and a ballooning upper lip. She later had to pay a real surgeon to repair the botched job.A court was told that Morris used superglue to patch up entry wounds in the skin.
But Morris struck back on Entertainment Tonight: 'They keep on lying, but you know the truth will prevail, and you know that’s why we have courts and stuff like that.'Morris denied that she is a fake doctor. 'If anybody’s the victim, it’s definitely me,' she said. She is now free on bond but police and health officials are continuing to investigate, urging other potential victims to come forward.
'We have continued to receive calls from several victims... many of them transsexuals, but for now there are two cases confirmed,' William Bamford, spokesman for the Miami Gardens Police Department, told AFP on Tuesday.Narinesingh says she was too afraid to go to the authorities.

Back room beauty treatment: Ms Narinesingh's face has been left misshapen by the illegal treatment
She explained: 'It becomes so dire for you to want to match your outside with your inside that you’re willing to roll the dice and take chances.'
Dr John Martin, who is now treating Ms Narinesingh, said he has been giving her therapeutic injections that he hopes will eventually soften the hard nodules that formed in her face and return her to a more normal appearance.'There is not an easy solution to this nightmare,' he said.
Ms Narinesingh says she is grateful to Dr Martin for trying to help give her a face back.
'I have learned my lesson,' She said. 'I could have died. I know that now.'

Australia's 'small breast' ban

Australia's government is "banning" adult publications and films featuring women with "small breasts," says Aussie activist Fiona Patten, on the grounds that such images encourage pedophilia. Patton, leader of the anti-censorship Australian Sex Party, is taking issue with a 2005 ruling which specified that even depictions of women who are over 18 but "appear to be" underage may be judged "illegal." Is this alleged practice a strategic way to fight child pornography, or — as Patten maintains — an absurd reaction to a perfectly normal female body type?
How could censoring small breasts curb kiddie porn? This "is a terrible idea for many reasons,"
says Maureen O'Connor in Gawker. Not only would such a ban do nothing to "reduce smut," censoring images of "small breasts" only codifies "an arbitrary set of female sexual ideals."
"Prude Australians try to ban small boobs and female ejaculation in porn"

Patton is exaggerating: We're all taking this too far, says Australian censorship blog Somebody Think of the Children. While it's true that the law does ban women who "look younger" than 18 from appearing in adult publications and films, images of small breasts alone are not "automatically" considered "illegal." For instance, "it’s highly unlikely that a naked photograph of a 30-, 40- or 50-year-old woman with small breasts" would ever be banned.
"Australia bans small breasts"

Regardless, the law is sexist: A ban that classifies normal female bodies as "obscene" could not be "any more insulting," says adult industry blog Ms Naughty. Not only does this encourage women to have breast augmentations, it characterizes men who think "small boobs are sexy" as "perverts." There's an easier way to determine if a woman is "'too young" — it's called checking her date of birth.

The next Generation, of children of the Hyphens.

Sarah Miller and Nathan Lamoure-Vincent followed tradition, giving their children their father's surname.
WHEN my parents married in 1977, women’s liberation was in full swing and my mother was a consciousness-raiser. She was about as likely to take my father’s name as she was to sport a veil at the wedding. She would remain Ms. Tuhus. Nine months later, the surname for their new baby (me) was self-evident. My parents yoked their names into a new one: Tuhus-Dubrow.

“I knew that was the best I could do,” my father told me. “As opposed to just Tuhus.”
Other parents, albeit a small minority, had the same idea. By the mid-1970s more women were keeping their maiden names, so hyphenating the names of the children seemed like the next logical raspberry to blow at the patriarchy, a stand against the family’s historical swallowing up of women’s identity.
Hyphenation has other pluses. The invented names are distinctive; I’ve never come across a Tuhus-Dubrow outside my immediate family. The inconveniences — blank stares, egregious misspellings — are outweighed by the blessing of never having to worry about a Google doppelgänger.
The problem, of course, is that this naming practice is unsustainable. (Growing up, I constantly fielded the question, “What will you do if you marry someone else with two last names? Will your kids have four names?”) Like many of the baby boomers’ utopian impulses, it eventually had to run up against practical constraints.
I don’t have children yet, but plenty of others in my cohort — the first in which nontrivial numbers were born hyphenated — do. And reproducing while hyphenated brings inevitable quandaries. I was curious to see how my peers have handled them. So I asked around. What I found was a whole gamut of solutions. The name-blending pioneers now have grandchildren whose names embody an intriguing mix of the traditional and the maverick.
I encountered several women who kept their own hyphenated names when they married, but gave their children the father’s surname. This scenario seems to deviate the least from the mainstream: after all, many other women with single surnames do the same.
Zoe Segal-Reichlin, 33, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood in New York, was typical in her approach to naming her son, now 10 months old. She said she flirted with alternatives: hyphenating three names, picking either Segal or Reichlin to link with her husband’s name. But ultimately, none felt quite right, and going with the father’s name won out as the most practical choice.
“It was the best of bad options,” she told me.
Same-sex couples face their own quandaries, since there is no tradition to follow. Cora Jeyadame (née Stubbs-Dame), 37, a first-grade teacher in Newton, Mass., was determined to share a name with her child, and to think ahead more than her own parents had.
“It’s a one-generation solution,” she said of hyphenation. She and her wife, whose surname was Jeyapalan, spliced their names together into an entirely new, hyphenless amalgam.
How did they decide on the name? “I actually put it out on Facebook,” she said: “ ‘I challenge you to come up with good combinations.’ ” The winning entry, Jeyadame, is the legal surname of Cora and her 4-month-old; her wife uses it socially.
Naming decisions raise novel questions for hyphenated men. There is little precedent of husbands changing their names at marriage or giving up the prerogative to pass their names on. Traditional practices grew out of a male-dominated culture and a need for simple rules. But there is another, less obvious motive: to hold men accountable for their offspring.
“How do you attach men to children?” said Laurie K. Scheuble, a senior lecturer at Pennsylvania State University who has done several studies on naming practices. Names are “a very functional and practical way” to do so.

Children of the Hyphens, the Next Generation

But perhaps, in an age when men wear BabyBjorns, it is no longer always necessary. When Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, 32, an English professor who lives in Portland, Ore., married Laura Rosenbaum, he toyed with the idea of a creative synthesis.
But “Rosenpollackpelznerbaum sounded like a weapon of mass destruction,” he said. When they had a son, giving him Daniel’s last name seemed too complicated, so they gave the baby Laura’s.
Mr. Pollack-Pelzner initially worried that having a different name would arouse suspicions, leading to airport frisks and other indignities. But since his son was born, “I’ve hardly thought about it at all.” No one has ever challenged whether he is the toddler’s father: “The poor guy is cursed to look just like me.”
Nathan Lamarre-Vincent and his wife, Sarah Miller, went the opposite direction, giving their children Nathan’s hyphenated name. Mr. Lamarre-Vincent, a 34-year-old Harvard postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology, said it was a default decision: “We were both kind of go-with-the-flow,” he said, and simply hewed to tradition.
The irony is that the name is the product of his own parents’ defiance of that tradition. It is a little like following every step of an old-school Thanksgiving recipe, but starting out with a Tofurky.
In a 2002 paper, Ms. Scheuble and her husband, David R. Johnson, a Penn State professor, predicted that the importance of a family name could begin to decline. Thanks to more divorce, remarriage, same-sex unions and retention of maiden names, it is far from unusual for members of the same nuclear family to bear different surnames.
Nevertheless, the vast majority of families stick with custom. According to a 2009 study analyzing data from 2004, only 6 percent of native-born American married women had unconventional surnames (meaning they kept their birth names, hyphenated with their husbands’ names, or pulled a Hillary Rodham Clinton).
I know lots of women, including myself, who kept their birth names at marriage. But according to my anecdotal observations, which others seconded, rates of hyphenation seem to have fallen since my brother and I were born.
As Ms. Segal-Reichlin said, “At the time I think they thought they were going to be the wave of the future,” but it has not panned out that way. Still, hyphenated names are not entirely a relic of the ’70s, like sideburns and lava lamps: witness the Jolie-Pitts.
Based on my conversations, the verdict on hyphenation was mixed.
“When I was young I hated it,” said Sarah Schindler-Williams, a 32-year-old lawyer in Philadelphia. “It was long, it never fit in anything. I was always Sarah Schindler-Willi.”
But most, including Ms. Schindler-Williams, eventually grew to appreciate their cumbersome monikers. Names frequently convey information about their bearers: Weinberg or O’Malley gives you a hint about the person attached to it. But conjoined names, several people mentioned, also say something extra about your parents’ egalitarian values. (Unless you are British; then it means you’re posh.)
What did our parents expect us to do when we reached this stage of our lives? They trusted it would all work out somehow. As Ms. Segal-Reichlin’s parents told her, “We figured that was your problem.”

Clouds gather over big dry

Atlas St John gets cool under the sprinkler as Gympie endures a record dry start to November.

GYMPIE has recorded its driest start to November on record with no rain now for 31 consecutive days.
The drought makes it the longest dry spell in 20 years for any month.
Lawns and paddocks have turned brown, tanks have run dry and water carriers are barely managing to meet demand.
As water levels in dams and tanks have dwindled, water carriers have found it increasingly difficult to keep up with demand.

Thousands of residents are hoping the "weather man" has got it right, and that the big dry will come to end today or tomorrow, with storms forecast for the region this evening and possible rain tomorrow.
Weather Channel spokesman Tom Saunders said yesterday Gympie's average November rainfall was 90mm and its driest ever November was back in 1919, when the city received just 1.3mm of rain.
Senior weather bureau forecaster Peter Otto said the region should receive about 20mm before the weekend, with more rain expected west of the range.
"This could be some of the more significant rain you would have seen in a month or two," he said.
"But it looks more than likely to be heavier to the west (up to 50mm). It's spring also, so that forecast could change in the next 24 hours.
"Over the state this is one of the most significant bands of rain we have seen in quite a few weeks, if not months.
"The difference now is we are starting to see a lot of storms over the Northern Territory and that moisture is starting to be brought towards us."
The national outlook for summer still shows a 60-80% chance of above median rainfall for south-east Queensland, with La Nina conditions slowly building in the tropical Pacific. The majority of leading climate models predict current patterns and trends will continue, with the event forecast to peak towards the end of 2011, and persist into early 2012.

To Extreme The Challenge Takes Yoga.

Princehorn performs a series of yoga positions in a 40-degree heated room.

THE heat is almost unbearable, and the exercises physically and emotionally challenging. But it's a challenge that Ashley Prince horn of the Sunshine Coast is willing to take. Buckram yoga is a form of yoga completed in a 40-degree heated room while completing a series of yoga positions. Most people who take on this form of yoga are looking to improve their health, but for Ash lea her reason for getting involved with buckram yoga hit closer to home.

Ashley is attempting to complete a one-and-a-half-hour buckram yoga session every day for 100 days to raise money for cancer research. "I am trying to raise money for the Queensland Cancer Council," she said. "An immediate family member was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and while I can't create a cure for cancer, I can raise money for research. "While her mother was given the all-clear three years ago, Ashley has not stopped campaigning for the cause. She also participates in various Relay for Life events. "If you look at the statistics, it's something like one in three (people) will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime," she said. Throughout her 100-day challenge, Ashley aims to hit the $5000 mark. So far, through the Everyday Hero website, she has raised $900, but she is hoping for more. "Everyone has been really supportive, and everyone at work keeps asking me about how the challenge is going," Ashley said. "I am halfway through, but I am really hoping that I can make the $5000 mark by the end of the challenge. "To keep motivated and update friends and family about her experiences throughout her challenge, Ashley is also keeping a daily blog, recalling how she feels and the changes she is seeing in her body. So, at day 60, how is the challenge shaping up? "I was talking to some of the ladies who had done this challenge before me and they said that the first 60 days were the hardest," she said. "And up until today, my body hurt and I was feeling generally fatigued. But today is day 60 and I can honestly say that I feel fantastic. "Despite this, Ashley said that the challenge had been trying at times considering the mental and physical strain it placed on the body. "Of course there have been emotional times throughout the journey, given that it is a test both mentally and physically, but I am so glad that I decided to do it," Ashley said. "People don't realize the benefits that come from doing buckram yoga. "It can improve people's quality of life. "To donate money to Ashley’s cause, head to her Everyday Hero website

Access to Care Denied.

Lee-Anne Dawson speaks out for locals who will be denied psychological care this Christmas due to cuts to the Better Access program.
Craig Warhurst
GYMPIE'S Lee-Anne Dawson is standing up for those who can't speak for themselves.
Her brave face represents a hidden crisis, brushed under the carpet in the latest round of budget cuts, which slashed funding of a proven mental health program.
The Federal Government announced in May it would save millions of dollars by rationalizing the Better Access program, which provides access to psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists.

Previous arrangements under the Better Access initiative meant patients could access up to 12 sessions of treatment from a psychologist per year by referral from their GP and a maximum of 18 sessions in "exceptional circumstances".
From this month, the yearly maximum allowance of sessions of psychological treatment will be reduced from 18 appointments to 10, with no exceptional circumstances enabling additional sessions.
"Many people with mental illness will be severely disadvantaged by not being able to access quality services through their local GP," a concerned Ms Dawson told The Gympie Times.
"This means that this Christmas when people are at their most vulnerable, about 87,000 Australians will be denied psychological care required for effective treatment."
Australian Psychological Society research indicates the Better Access initiative has been providing care for the very people it was designed to treat - those with high prevalence mental health disorders and significant levels of distress who are being managed by GPs in primary care settings.
This type of treatment also reduces costs of hospital admissions and allows many consumers to return to work, with the associated productivity benefits.
The government's rationale for cutting funding is that affected patients can seek alternative treatment through the Access to Allied Psychological Services program, public mental health facilities or private psychiatrists.
However, these avenues are not currently accessible or equipped to manage the large influx of affected people.
"I think the government is relying on people's silence," Ms Dawson said.
